The Ruth Underwood History & Heritage Scholarship was created to support and encourage members of the Garden Sanctuary community who are pursuing academic excellence in the field of History, preserving the past to inform the future. 

  • To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following baseline requirements:
    Church Affiliation: The applicant must be an active member or regular attendee of Garden Sanctuary Church of God for at least one (1) year prior to the application deadline. "Active" is defined as regular attendance at corporate worship and involvement in at least one ministry area.

    • Other Church of God Affiliations: Members or regular attendees of all Church of God congregations are also welcomed to apply for this scholarship, provided they meet the other criteria. Non-Garden Sanctuary applicants will receive 50% of the published annual award amount. Priority will be given in the following order: Garden Sanctuary Students, South Carolina Church of God Students, all other Church of God students.

  • Academic Pursuit: The applicant must be enrolled (or accepted for enrollment) in an accredited college, university, or seminary.

  • Field of Study: The applicant must have a declared major or concentration in History or a directly related field (e.g., Church History, Classical Studies, Archaeology, or Historical Theology).

  • GPA Requirement: The applicant must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in their current academic institution.

  • The 2026 award amount will be $2000 and will be paid directly to the student.
